Verse of the Day: “In your anger do not sin” : Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry" (Ephesians 4:26)

Book Review:  Another one of Alyssa's book's; this one was a 10/10 on the awesome scale!!  Basically its about a woman who's autistic son grows violent and ends up in an psychiatric ward, only to then be accused of murdering one of the other patients.  The story follows the mom's desperate attempt to clear her son from blame, and ends in a way that even I (a mystery officianato) would never have expected. Check it out!!

Things that are awesome: "Songify the News" clips on youtube.  Basically, people have started using T-pain's auto-tune technology to turn news segments into songs, with hilarious results.  At this time of year, with all the elections and yelling and seriousness, I couldn't have discovered this lighthearted spin on things at a better time. This one about the BP oil spill is hilarious. Check it out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yghFBt-fXmw

Things that are awesome: House and Wilson's prank wars. I was missing my Hugh Laurie fix, so I decided to go back and rewatch seasons 4-8. Jen and I were watching some old eps today before work, and I have to say... these two make my life. Funniest pair of friends ever. In fact, I"m going to start a "House Quotes of the day" section in their honor.. meheheh.

Verse of the Day: “A person finds joy in giving an apt reply— and how good is a timely word!” Proverbs 15:23 NIV

Things that are awesome:

I first heard about this ministry at church as a junior higher, and it has been a traditional part of our holiday season as a family ever since.  Basically every year this ministry sends millions of boxes full of toys, art supplies, toiletries, etc to kids all over the world who might otherwise not recieve anything for Christmas.  Every year my dad and I go out and each of us make a box (sometimes my mom does too)- it is so much fun!  You get to pick boy or girl, and your age group, and then go crazy filling it with all sorts of fun things.  If you're organized enough, you can even work at the factory where they pack up the boxes to send them out- I"ve done that too! The whole ministry is just a great chance to do something really fun and simple for someone who doesn't have much! The boxes this year are due at drop off locations Nov 12-19. Check out the website and pack one yourself- it'll be the best gift you buy this year- promise! http://www.samaritanspurse.org/index.php/OCC/Pack_A_Shoe_Box/

Verse of the Day: “Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4 NIV

Book Review:  Found this book during one of my regular book-browsing sesions at Target, and had to pick it up.  Basically the story of a girl who commits suicide and leaves a series of tapes explaining the series of events that lead to her tragic decision.  While I obviously didn't agree with her decision, and was frusterated with her at times, the book was really well written, and I think it had a very important message.. that we can affect people's lives deeply by the things we do, and we need to be so careful to be a positive influence and source of Christ's love to people rather than the opposite. Though obviously no one else can MAKE someone commit suicide or be blamed for it, careless words and actions CAN end up hurting someone a lot... Anyone interested in psychology, or just a book with an interesting format would definetly enjoy this.  I'd give it a 9 out of 10 on the great-book scale.
Things that are awesome: e-trade baby commercials.  .. You wouldn't think a baby talking in an adult voice would be THAT funny.. but literally these are all hilarious. 1017/12

*Dear Readers.  My last blog was about a kid named Spencer, and tragically, he died on Monday night.  The last couple days of not writing were my version of a moment of silence- as it were.  We are all going to miss him.

Verse of the Day: “The LORD confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them. My eyes are ever on the LORD, for only he will release my feet from the snare.” Psalm 25:14-15 NIV

Things that are awesome:  Kermit never fails to make me smile.  Ever since I was a kid and my grandpa had a kermit the frog phone, this muppet has been one of my favorite fictional characters.  He sings a couple of really funny songs, including "its not easy being green" and "the rainbow connection" with his little banjo, and his frog-voice is fantastic!  If he were a real frog, he and I would totally hang. :)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4ZxxHbJGbY
Spaghetti Goulash Recipe * Spaghetti Goulash.  This is the second recipe I made out of my Taste of Home casserole cookbook.  It has quite a few ingredients, but it turned out really good, and it lasts quite a long time, since it makes a lot. These attachment styles have been shown to impact people later in life.

10/14/12

Dear readers,

I'm too stubborn to ever give up and NOT right a blog for the day, but at the same time, I'm in too much of a funk to write any of the usual stuff.  I have all these thoughts running through my mind, and no place else to really put them, so guess I'll send them out your unknown-crowdness instead.

So basically something really terrible happened in our church, and its just reminding me of how sad life is.  This teenager named Spencer was our shooting arrows with a friend yesterday and got shot in the head by accident.  His friend panicked and pulled the arros out, which sent Spencer into a coma.  As of today, and several scans later, he has no brain activity.  A 16 year old kid, his whole life ahead of him, on the edge of death because of a stupid accident. I'm hoping with everyone else that God will heal Him, but I'm not psychic, so there's no way to be at peace about it ahead of time really.

In Sunday school today, we prayed about it with the little kids, and one of them just sat there and held his head and cried. It was terrible to watch; I hugged him and offered him tissues as any therapist-to-be would, but it all felt so empty. The worst part of it was that I realized...that I didn't share this kid's horrified shock. That when I heard about it I felt mostly numb because, to me, this is just par-du-course- the world is a horrible place and always will be. I used to fight it, optimistically thinking that things CANT be this bad, but now I've given up, because I know that tragedies happen every day, and I control nothing. I stopped hoping because too many shocked-disappointments killed all that.  Is that normal? Probably not.

Life ends unexpectedly everyday for people, and I want my non-Christian friends to have peace and salvation in Christ, but of course I can't control that either, which sucks too. At the end of days like this I'm just like, "Jesus come get me; there can't possibly be anything else coming that's so "wondeful" that I'd be sad I missed it for the sake of being in Heaven with you instead."  I'm so tired of seeing all the pain this world, this imperfect life, inflicts.

That's today.   The end.

Verse of the Day: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 NIV

Book Review:Got this book from Alyssa also.  Basically tells a story of a woman's 25 year struggle with anorexia, from her youngest son's perspective.  As a psychology person and someone with a related past, I've read a lot of books about eating disorders, but most of them were from the sufferer's perspective, so this was an interesting change of pace.  Definetly super sad.. I felt empathy for both the mother AND her children.  The one good thing I got out of it was further motivation to help people that struggle with this and other similar issues- addictions can be so painful!!!  I can't get in and out of grad school fast enough.

Things that are awesome: My brother Jonathan.  He turns 24 today, and I am so proud of the man he has become, how devoted he is to folling Jesus and telling others about him.  He's been a great friend to me also. Best brother I could've asked for! Love ya Jon.

Things that are awesome:  ... Caught this movie on cable tonight- haven't seen it in a really long time.  Basically about two old men who take in their young nephew after his flaky mom abandons him. PROVING the importance of physical affection for developing well-adjusted offspring.

Target Guest Service.  The one at our store looks way cooler than this, but anyways the point is, I got to train back there today and it was SO FUN!!  Maybe its the OCD in me, but I love all the organization of stock that goes on back there, and how there's always something to do.. even if there's no customers around to help. The change of pace was nice too! ... And Jen was right next door in photo... 'nuff said.  Hopefully I get to work back there a lot in future!
